DON’T EVER UNDER ESTIMATE A WOMAN. Although they didn’t gain the right to vote in the state until 1914, they played a very important role, though often unrecognized and underestimated, through club work, organizations, and social position.

LEARN ABOUT THE WOMEN HISTORY FORGOT. They settled here in the early days and made our area a better place to live. Walk along as you learn why Vida Boyle was chastised for allowing dancing in the Governor’s Mansion. You will no longer wonder how Anna Warren practiced law without a law degree, why Libby Booth had a school named after her with the name misspelled, or what woman had to find a different job when she ‘aged out’ of the one she had held for years. The answers will be revealed.

LEARN ABOUT SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT NEVADA’S FIRST LADIES who have their final resting place within Mountain View Cemetery:
Idelle Sinnamon Balzar, wife of Governor Frederick Balzar
Mary Poor Bell, wife of Governor Frank Bell
Vida Margaret McClure Boyle, wife of Governor Emmett Boyle
Maybell Jean King Kirman, wife of Governor Richard Kirman
Jackalyn Margaret Ross Laxalt, wife of Governor Paul Laxalt
Ida Louise Brewington Pittman, wife of Governor Vail Pittman
Julia McCann Scrugham, wife of James Scrugham
Nora Knight Sparks, wife of Governor John Sparks

WHAT WOMAN HAD BEEN A FORMER ALASKA DOG MUSHER AND GOLD MINER? What First lady was an ardent anti-suffragist? What two ladies owned the Nevada State Journal at different times? Who was First Lady that was both the wife of the Nevada Governor and state Prison Warden?

Our tour starts promptly at 10:30 a.m. in Mountain View Cemetery.
Park near the west corner of Sequoia Drive and Juniper Avenue.
